Going The Distance – Keep Your Battery Power Going

We’ve all experienced the stomach-churning feeling of a dead car battery. You need to be somewhere and you’re running late, only to discover you’ve got a dead car battery after turning your key in the ignition. Your car’s battery is essential to start your engine. It may be small, but the power it provides is huge. When your battery is dead, your car won’t start (until you give it a charge or replace the battery).

Checking your battery first will help you decide if you need to recharge it. First, is the battery properly secured in your vehicle? Are all terminals and cables connected tightly and clean? Sometimes, a poor connection can also result in a dead battery. Jump-starting is a common way to deal with a dead car battery. Need help in fixing a dead car or truck battery? Read our step-by-step guidelines here.

Signs Of A Dead Car Battery

A car battery is either good or it’s dead. And, nobody wants to be stuck at home or on the side of the road. There are various reasons why car batteries die. A few common ones include lack of battery maintenance, not starting a vehicle for long periods of time, or using the air conditioner when the car is not running.

Nowadays, most modern car batteries have evolved to function longer and work at full capacity. However, it’s still important to understand the signs that your battery is about to fail. Have you noticed any of the following:

  • Clicking noise when turning the key
  • Engine cranks slowly or won’t start at all
  • Diminished electric functions (dimmed headlights, radio doesn’t turn on, slower windshield wipers, etc.)
  • Odd smell coming from your battery
  • Corroded terminals
  • Engine light flashes or stays on constantly
  • Battery is old (battery is over 5 years old)

To Help You Care For Your Battery, We Recommend The Following:

  1. Test battery condition
  2. Tighten up loosened terminals and clamps
  3. Check the alternator belt wear and tension
  4. Clean and take out rust, and add anti-corrosive protection
  5. Turn off cabin lights, front lights, and the vehicle radio when the vehicle isn’t in use
Starting Problems – Battery, Alternator, Or Starter?

Not knowing how well your battery is doing can leave you stranded. In some cases, battery trouble may not be the only culprit why your vehicle won’t start. When your car or truck won’t start, it is likely an issue with the battery, starter, or alternator.

Starter issues may stem from a mechanical or electrical failure, or from it breaking down completely.

Your alternator charges the battery when the engine is running. It also powers the electrical system, such as windshield wipers, headlights, and more. A bad alternator prevents your engine from running or causes erratic electrical functions. If you have a damaged alternator, your engine may still start but will die quickly, because your battery will lose its charge since the alternator won’t be able to keep it charged up.
